9/11 will never be forgotten. I was actually a student at NYU College of Dentistry when the Twin Towers fell. We could see the smoke from the 7th floor of the dental school labs, and even then, we didn’t know the gravity of the situation. We were instructed to carry on and because our school was a health care facility just miles away from the site, we remained open and continued going to class, labs and clinic. It was a somber and quiet time, so unlike the usual city that never sleeps. The thing that stood out the most was the strength, unity and love that grew from that horrendous course of events. We stood together as a community and really helped one another heal and regain hope. It was one of the most heart-wrenching times for me, but it taught me a lot about the human spirit, resiliency and humility.
Held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, the California Dental Association (CDA) offers its annual convention for Dental Professionals to come together and take a multitude of continuing education classes and be introduced to new, cutting edge products. It’s pretty amazing to see the diversity in dentistry and the enthusiasm for the profession. I was able to go with my dental team and learn some more team building skills as well as reconnect with other dental colleagues. It was a great time! I was so tempted to buy this one t-shirt: “I’ve got 99 problems, but a cavity ain’t one!”—Dentistry humor is the best!
In the midst of summer, I am frequently asked about whitening. “Does it work? Is it harmful to my teeth? Is it expensive?” I can wholeheartedly say that it does work, it is not irreversibly damaging and it can be pretty affordable depending on your time schedule and compliance. At the office of Gretchen S. Gadwood, we offer several different options to fit your needs.
The 2 main things that you must know: follow the instructions of the whitening system, because overuse can damage the nerve, and understand that any whitening system you use will result in some tooth sensitivity, but only while you use the system. To learn more, feel free to ask us about whitening this summer or anytime during the year!
The Golden State Warriors are a perfect example of how important teamwork is! No one player can stand alone and carry the team. At the office of Gretchen S. Gadwood, DDS, we feel the same way. Our success is based on teamwork, communication and a shared passion for delivering quality dentistry. We hope you can see and feel this in your experience with us, and that you are comfortable enough to let us know how we can improve your dental experience at any time. We appreciate your feedback!
Saying farewell and good luck to someone is often a bittersweet experience. Starting in June, we say goodbye to Anna as she will be going on maternity leave! Although her front office role was understood to be temporary, she will be greatly missed as she embarks on a new chapter of her life- Motherhood. I will always be so grateful to Anna for helping me out during my time of need and being such a caring and hard-working person. She is top-quality and there is no doubt that she will carry that same devotion, integrity and compassion to her role as Mother. Best Wishes Anna! You will be missed.
I just returned from a fantastic weekend in Arizona, taking a 2-day continuing education course in dental implants. I went with my dental study club group and learned so much about implant care and various treatment options. My study group includes some great dental specialists and it was so exciting to troubleshoot and brainstorm with them about unique and challenging dental cases. It was a wonderful experience with a great team of people. The learning never stops!
We finally did it! We hosted an Open House and it was a success. We had delicious food from JSW catering, awesome decorations and flowers from Gina, and special raffle prizes (thanks Cliff and Judy!) that were a hit! Thank you all for coming out and making it more than just a meet and greet, but really a fun and lively party that ran overtime. My staff and their spouses also made it happen! They kept me sane during the preparation and saved me during the clean up. So humbled and appreciative! If you missed the Open House, please drop by anytime to look around. My office is open to you and your family!!!
February is a month filled with quirky holidays: “Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day,” “Get a Different Name Day,” and “Do a Grouch a Favor Day!” However, the most notable ones are “Toothache Day” on February 9th and “National Tooth Fairy Day” on February 28th!!! The month of February is also dedicated to Children’s Dental Health, so you could say the month of February is significant in the world of Dentistry. Don’t hesitate to call our office if you are in any dental pain, notice any tooth mobility or have questions or concerns about your family’s oral health…and not just in February!
Every New Year’s Eve, I am filled with a little anxiety because of the pressure to make resolutions. It’s always the same things too: Spend less, eat less, move more, and make more time with my family. Of course, I’m never really organized enough to make detailed plans of action to be successful in these hopes and wishes. Something always sidetracks or distracts me.
This year, I resolve to turn these “dreams” into goals with definitive markers. I will spend $100 less on groceries/month, I will eat fast food only 1/month (going cold turkey is unrealistic!), I will go to the park and play with my family 1/week, and I will not do any work-related tasks at home until 9p when the kiddo is in bed. Wish me luck!
I will also write these goals down (check!) to make them more real.
What are your New Year’s Resolutions?!
I often tease my patients at this time of the New Year to resolve to floss more or brush longer! And although I am speaking in general terms, what I really mean is floss at least 3/week and brush for 2 minutes total, once in the morning and once at night. Perhaps by being more specific with my patients, they will achieve better and more definitive results too.
Can’t wait to see what great things 2015 holds for us! I look forward to seeing you soon!!!
Monday marks the Grand Opening of MY NEW OFFICE!
It is very exciting and nerve-racking at the same time, seeing my hard-work and determination fully realized. It wasn’t easy but I know “leaving the nest” was worth it in that I could really build something of my own.
I am truly so thankful for the support, encouragement and belief that my family, friends and dear patients have shown me during this whole process. I hope you all enjoy the new location, my new (awesome) team and my ever-growing ambition for quality and personalized dental care.
